I think Richard Scarry was in Cali for part of his career, oddly enough. Seems like I heard that here. One of the fire trucks in an illustration was a recognizable west coast type, I think, and came up for discussion prompting that. At any rate, growing up in the Depression and starting his illustration career when he did he definitely had a chance to see unusual mascot cars in real life.

You know, I just always automatically assumed Scarry was a British guy in California (based on his car choices). This is just my personal guess based on 35 years of reading Cars & Trucks & Things That Go.

What I love about his drawings is the amount of detail an accuracy he goes in for, in what are basically cartoons. You can learn a whole lot of basic information from his books.
